Fort-Chambly National Historic Site

This is the third Parks Canada National Historic Site that we’ve visited around Montreal, and we’ve found all three to be super fun for families and kids of all ages.

Fort-Chambly is the largest of the three we’ve seen (you can find the other two HERE and HERE), and I think it had the most to do and see.
We arrived just after it opened at 10am and were greeted with a friendly welcome from the Parks’ staff. They’ll let you know the prices (FREE for kids 17 & under), and tell you about the various activities available.

It was particularly interesting being here after having studied about New France last year with my fifth grader, and I recognized tons of names and started prattling off dates to my unimpressed family.

We made sure to be there to see and participate in the Uniform presentation, with the six-year old getting to dress in full soldier’s uniform, and watched the Soldiers, keep up the rhythm! exercise. Make sure to cover your ears!
Grab the Xplorers program booklet and kids can search for clues throughout the fort and redeem the answer for a prize. Don’t forget to get yourself in costume before heading inside to get the full (itchy) effect!

Things to note:
-The fort is accessible with ramps, and an elevator inside to the second floor. There is also room inside for strollers.
-Parking is free and located right off the main road, and a short walk from the fort entrance.
-Bring your snacks or picnic as there are tables inside the fort courtyard, as well as on the exterior grounds. Wheelchair-accessible tables are also available.
-The fort is a short walk from the Chambly Canal National Historic Site, as well as numerous restaurants, ice cream parlours, and bars.

For the full list of fees, hours and days of operation (they change through the seasons), and the various tours and activities you can participate in, make sure to check out the official website before heading out.
